ONLINE SPANISH IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
· S SPAN 1, Section 4921 and SPAN 2, Section 4923 are both offered as totally online 4-unit classes for Fall 2024. Expect to commit to at least EIGHT to TWELVE hours a week of learning, practicing and studying to be successful, the equivalent of being on campus for 4 hours each week plus homework and study time. Classes will take place in Canvas, the Learning Management System used for online courses at Columbia College. You can can see the syllabi for Span 1 and Span 2 for Fall 2024 under Downloads on the left.
·
· You MUST buy an access code for the E-text, Portales 2.0, which is where you will complete your learning activities. Check out your options at the CC College Bookstore. You can also compare prices at the Vista Higher Learning store for Columbia College. You will first need to create an account, which you will also use for logging in to Portales, your interactive Spanish text where you will complete learning and practice activities. NOTE: If you are in need of a free 2-week grace period offered by the publisher (Vista Higher Learning), you can register in Portales 2.0 and then send me an email to activate the grace period so you can get started and have some time to figure out your financial situation.
You will have options for access code only or access code with a loose-leaf text. You DO NOT need a paper text, but some people like to have one. There are two textbooks on reserve in the Columbia College library for student use and Portales 2.0 includes a Vtext, or online version of the text, which is the same as the paper text. The 5-month access code will be enough for the Fall 2024 semester but if you anticipate needing or wanting longer access to the material/activities, you can also purchase 12 or 24 month access.
BEFORE CLASS BEGINS
I will send an
email to all registered and wait-listed students a few days before class
begins with important information. All email communication is sent to students'
YCCD student email accounts, so be sure to have that set up! Take a look at this
page on how to set up your student email. Check this page for HELP with Online Classes for students for helpful resources to begin the semester. NOTE: If the Span 1 or Span 2 class is full, please email me to see about adding. It is possible I might be able to add a few more students.
As noted in the Syllabus, we will have a live orientation online via Zoom during the first week of the semester. Check your Canvas class for more details. Orientation videos will be recorded for anyone who cannot attend to view later. You will find more details in the Orientation Module for our class in
Canvas. Bring your questions and let's get to know each other!
Biography
ABOUT ME:
I first learned Spanish in Mexico many years ago and, later in life, decided to pursue a BA and teaching credential at CSU, Chico. I taught high school Spanish for several years before beginning to teach Spanish at Columbia College in 2003. I've been teaching Spanish online since 2009 and also work with the Online Education Initiative as an online course reviewer, facilitate professional development courses for online instructors with @ONE and score Spanish exams for an educational testing company. I am passionate about language and quality online learning!
I live in Magalia, CA (just up the hill from Chico, CA) with my husband, Joe (also known as Jose, el gringo,) and our two dogs, Bob and Daisy. We moved here from Mokelumne Hill in Calaveras County in 2018. We enjoy living close to my daughter and grand kids (and one little great grand kid!) My daughter (who was born in Mexico over 35 years ago!) is a Pediatric RN at a Chico hospital. I am so proud of her! I love to read, write, listen to music, play guitar, watch good films, cook (and eat) and travel.
I look forward to learning about you, what you love to do and what you're passionate about! Please feel free to contact me about anything and everything. Hasta luego, Profesora Teresa
