Biography

As concert artist and professor of piano, Dr. Sarah Chan engages an international artistry and teaching experience that extends across North America, Europe, Asia, and South America  as well as remotely to Africa. Chan has performed at venues including Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Berlin Philharmonic Hall, National Philharmonic of Ukraine, Salle Cortot-Paris, Sala Atenu-Romania, Teatro Municipal de Las Condes-Santiago, Beifang Performing Arts Hall, and Ningxia Normal University Concert Hall in China.

Chan has received awards including The American Prize in Piano Performance; the U.S. Presidential Scholar Distinguished Teacher Award, California State University (CSU), Stanislaus Outstanding Professor Award; CSU Stanislaus Outstanding Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity Award; and the Award for Excellence in Teaching at the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester. 

Dr. Chan teaches applied piano at Modesto Junior College (2024-2025) and also serves as Lecturer in Music (Piano) at Stanford University and as Associate Professor of Music (Keyboard Studies/Theory) and Coordinator of Keyboard Studies at California State University, Stanislaus. An active artist-teacher; she has given masterclasses and lectures across the U.S., Canada, Chile, Ukraine, China, and remotely to Ghana. Chan serves as national Board Member for Performance and chair of the Performance Council of The College Music Society. 

Sarah Chan received her musical training at the Eastman School of Music (D.M.A.), Le Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (Paris Conservatory of Music-graduate studies), Peabody Conservatory of Music (M.M.), Manhattan School of Music (B.M.), and the University of Michigan. Chan engaged liberal arts studies, with a concentration in French and French literature, at the University of Michigan, Columbia University, and La Sorbonne.
