Course Description:
The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course prepares the student to provide entry level prehospital emergency assessment and care for patients with medical and/or traumatic conditions. This is a face-to-face class, however, there is homework online to be completed outside of classroom time.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Student learning outcomes (SLOs) are statements that specify what students will know, be able to do or demonstrate, when they have completed or participated in a program/activity/course/project. SLOs are evidence that the course objectives were achieved. The following are the SLOs for EMS 157:
1. Following Federal and State prescribed standards; students will possess the necessary entry level cognitive skills for certification as an Emergency Medical Responder.
2. Following Federal and State prescribed standards; students will possess the necessary entry level psychomotor skills for certification as an Emergency Medical Responder.
3. Students will demonstrate proficiency, to the nationally recognized standard for healthcare providers, in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated electrical defibrillation (AED) required to obtain a 2-year certification.

Students for whom English is a second language are also eligible for these free services.
Work to be completed outside of class: Reading, study, completion of work-textbook, weekly online homework, and one online test, and online CPR course. You are expected to read assigned chapters prior to class discussion and lecture.
Recommended study time for this course is 6 hours per week.
Grading:
Online Tests: 310 points
Written final: 100 points
Participation/Attendance: 94.5 points
504.5 points
Participation/Attendance points are calculated as:
1 ½ hours per chapter (reading chapters, Powerpoints, Homework)
3 hours per class attended.
94.5 hours possible total.
You must have 70 hours in attendance points to pass the class.
A= 90-100%
B= 80-89%
C= 70-79% (75% minimum required for course completion certificate)
D= 60-69%
F= <60%
Participation standard:
54 hours of instruction is required; this includes attendance and participation. You are expected to attend all class sessions; if you miss more than 3 hours of class you will be ineligible for a course completion certificate. In addition, you must pass all skills tests to be issued a course completion certificate.. For best retention of material, read the chapters.
*Wear closed-toe shoes and clothing in which you can comfortably practice skills.
*Be free of scented cologne, lotions, etc. as these products can cause severe allergic reactions in susceptible people.
*No artificial nails.
*No food or tobacco products; drinks are allowed if in a covered container.
*Turn off electronic devices and keep phones out of sight.
*No fidget spinners or other distracting devices.
*Practice using a positive, supportive and motivated attitude that you would expect of a healthcare professional. Please arrive on time at the beginning of each class, be seated, well rested and ready to participate. You are responsible to confirm your tardiness on the roll sheet after that class session. [In an unforeseeable emergency, an exception may be made, however this will not excuse the time not present; class hours are mandated by the State of California]
*You may not be awarded attendance points if you are asked to leave class because you have not met these standards.
Recommended for Success: Prior to enrolling in this course, students are strongly advised to satisfactorily complete OFTEC 50 (Medical Terminology) and/or satisfactorily complete BIOL 150 (Elementary Anatomy & Physiology).
Take photos of your CPR card and Course Completion certificate and email them to yourself; there is a $20 charge for re-issue of a CPR card or a Course Completion certificate.
